Therapy

At Thinking Otter Psychology, we provide supportive, evidence-based therapy for children and adolescents who may be experiencing emotional, behavioural, or school-related challenges. We understand that every young person is different, and we take a thoughtful, collaborative approach that considers the child, their family, and the environments they are growing in.

Our therapy focuses on helping young people better understand their emotions, develop coping skills, and build confidence, while also supporting parents with practical strategies they can use at home and school.

Areas of Support:

Anxiety

We support children and adolescents experiencing anxiety, including:

  • Separation anxiety
  • Social anxiety
  • Excessive worries or fears
  • Phobias

Therapy focuses on helping children and adolescents recognise anxious feelings, understand how anxiety shows up in their body and thoughts, and learn strategies to manage their experiences.

Low Mood, Sadness, and Depression

Some children and adolescents experience ongoing sadness, low mood, or a loss of enjoyment in things they previously liked. Therapy can support children and adolescents to:

  • Talk about their feelings in a safe space
  • Build emotional awareness and coping skills
  • Strengthen connections with others
  • Develop strategies to manage difficult thoughts and emotions

Emotional and Behavioural Challenges

Emotional and behavioural challenges often reflect difficulties with emotional regulation. We support children who may experience:

  • Big feelings that feel hard to manage
  • Frequent anger, frustration, or emotional outbursts
  • Difficulty calming down or recovering after becoming upset

Therapy focuses on helping children and adolescents understand their emotions, develop regulation skills, and find more adaptive ways to express themselves.

Low Self-Esteem and Confidence

Some children and adolescents struggle with confidence, self-doubt, or negative self-beliefs. Therapy can support them to:

  • Recognise their strengths
  • Develop a more positive sense of self
  • Build confidence in social, school, or everyday situations
  • Feel more capable and resilient

School Can’t / School Refusal

School Can't is often linked to anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or unmet needs. We work with families to:

  • Understand the underlying reasons a child is finding school difficult
  • Support emotional regulation and coping skills
  • Collaborate with parents and schools where appropriate
  • Develop gradual, supportive strategies to help children re-engage with learning
